Chapter 3
Chapter 3
Somewhere in the forest a lone ranger wandered through the shaded trees. His boots laden with mud and his cloak trailing behind him. He fed the fire that flickered beside him with a fierce light with some sticks he found on the forest floor. His straggly brown hair shaded his face and there was a glint in his eyes like the stars that shone in the sky above. The night was drawing nearer and while the birds settled in the trees a power was growing in the east. The ranger looked up to the moon and sang a song in a foreign tongue.
From the valleys of Rivendell, on the balcony of a tall building , a fair faced elf looked at the moon and sang the same song. Her hair flowed over her shoulders , her voice almost like a bird. As she finished singing she closed her eyes and looked down. A tear fell from her cheek and she brushed it away with her fingertips. It wasn’t like an elf to be so sad but her heart was weary from many long nights being unable to sleep. Her dreams filled with darkness and things she did not understand. She knew there would be a day when many of them would come true and that is what she feared most.
A tall elf walked into the room, noticing the tears falling from the elven maiden’s eyes. “Ada!” She cried and held him close to her. He kissed her forehead. He seemed to be a lot older than her except he had a certain youthful look about him. His skin was soft and smooth but his eyes were filled time and endurance , wisdom and experience but also a great love for his people. He was Elrond , Lord of Rivendell.
“What is wrong my child?” His voice calming to her.
“I fear for the future. I fear for our people.”
“Arwen , some Elves have the gift of foresight but not all things come to pass. Things can change.” He sat down with her on the bench nearby. “What did you see?”
“I saw our people fail , soldiers , elven warriors dying on the battlefield. There was no hope nor glory for them.” Another tear rolled down her porcelain like cheek. “A shadow of evil grew and we were unable to stop it. Is that our future Ada?” Elrond looked into his daughter’s eyes with an understanding. He could see the pain and sorrow she had felt. His dreams told him otherwise. He too saw the shadow growing but he saw the courage and hope the elves had brought before and they had won. He knew they could do it again.
“No. I do not see us failing. You speak of death and destruction but I see hope and hope. We do not know exactly what will happen. This battle may be won or it could be lost. It could happen in a matter of months or years. I have told you before , with every step we take it has a different consequence. What you may see now may change tomorrow. Do not worry. Get some rest , it will do you good. Namerie Arwen.” He kissed her forehead and left , closing the door behind him. Arwen walked into her room and thought of the ranger in the forest hoping he was thinking of her too. As the sky became darker the moon shone brighter and the elf and ranger were connected as they both sang a song knowing that someday they would meet again.
